It is a nice and central area with a hipster kind of vibe with lots of cool and laid-back cafe, restaurants, pubs, and shops. You will love the Haji Lane, a narrow walking street with cool small shops, restaurants, and cafes. Also, if you like movies, check out the cool and independent cinema The Projector, also located in this area. You can easily walk over to Little India for great Indian food. Both of these hotels have a swimming pool, which I think is a must in Singapore. Andaz Singapore is a brand new hotel opened autumn which is also very nice with a fantastic large infinity swimming pool on the roof 25th floor which I think you will love.
If you want a hotel in a lower budget, then Hotel G is a great mid-range option. We stayed here several nights and it was excellent, very clean and hip. Does not have a swimming pool, unfortunately. The standard room is a bit small, however, so we upgraded our room to the next level a larger room so we could fit our luggage.
Try the burger place on the ground floor of the G hotel, we loved their burgers and ate here three times, hehe. Check out our recommended 3-Day Singapore Itinerary. An absolutely amazing article!
